The clean-up took place at the Bill Stewart Nature Reserve.

Ward 20 and Ward 36 councillors Jill Humphreys and Wendy Morgan respectively met with residents at Hilltop Road in Dawnview at the start of the day’s activities.

Denis Quinlan, a Hilltop Road resident, said in the last couple of months there have been several clean-up projects.

Germiston and Bedfordview residents joined hands to clean the Bill Stewart Nature Reserve.

“School children visit the area for different purposes and we need to keep the reserve clean and well-taken care of. I clean the entrance of the reserve regularly,” said Quinlan.

Xolile Chamane, a Boksburg resident who visited the reserve for the first time, said the view from the hilltop stole his heart.

“From one point you can see the Sandton, Johannesburg CBD and Eastgate centre. The air is refreshing,” said Chamane.

He urged the surrounding communities to take care of the reserve and engage in more regular clean-ups.

Christopher Walker (16) said as part of his Youth Day celebration, he decided to join the clean-up.

“It is time we encourage young people to start making the changes they want to see in their communities,” said Walker.

“We need to get out of our comfort zones and be productive members of the society,” he said.

Humphreys said she is working on a proposal to get mountain bikers utilising the reserve.

“Mountain biking has become popular in recent years. Our local bikers go as far as Boksburg to host their events,” said Humphreys.

“We need to attract more people to turn this area into an attraction and start generating revenue,” she said.

“This day reminds us that if young people can come together they can achieve anything,” she said.
