Vegetation control along OR Tambo and Giloolly’s

The three-year, R500 million project includes grass-cutting, tree felling, litter picking and vegetation control to improve the aesthetics of cleaner and more beautiful roads.

The Department for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure have launched the provincial roads grass cutting and vegetation control project.

Launched by MEC Jacob Mamabolo the project will target roads along OR Tambo International Airport and Giloolly’s Interchange.

The three-year, R500m project, includes grass-cutting, tree felling, litter picking and vegetation control to improve the aesthetics of cleaner and more beautiful roads.

This will serve to ensure that median and reserves along major roads are maintained to acceptable standards.
Undertaken in partnership with municipalities, the project is expected to create more than 1 000 jobs across all the regions.

“We are intensifying our road maintenance by launching a three-year program for grass cutting today. Millions have been invested over three years and that may also increase,” said Mamabolo.

Employment for the project is targeted at the youth and women.

The department also stated that the expected job opportunity numbers will be increased as the project picks up steam.

A total of 17 companies have been appointed for the project.

The project is expected to enhance the Department’s #SmartMobilityWeekends campaign aimed at patching and fixing potholes, and installing and fixing signage and markings on the province’s road network.
