Bringing services back to the community of Modderfontein and surrounds

Moloisane was elected as the new councillor for Ward 32 during last year’s local government elections but his career in activism started more than a decade before.

Ward 32 councillor in Greenstone and Modderfontein Dimakatso Moloisane is on a mission to bring service delivery back to the residents.

“Residents have lost so much faith in the municipality that they are doing the maintenance the city should be doing and it’s unfair on my communities,” said Moloisane.

Moloisane was elected as the new councillor for Ward 32 during last year’s local government elections but his career in activism started more than a decade before.

“I first worked with the local structures of the youth CPF in Norwood and Orange Grove before volunteering with the Hillbrow SAPS’ Youth Desk where I served as the secretary.”

He said when he started looking for a political home he looked at several parties.

“One of South Africa’s biggest parties actually approached me but I found them to be quite hostile and I was told I’m not a good fit for the party.”

He approached other parties but either never heard back from them or they failed to fit in with his beliefs.

“I subscribed to the DA Youth Desk newsletter and started following what the party was doing”.

Under the mentorship of party leaders, Moloisane worked with his ward councillor.

By 2014 he was working with the party on social media management as well as spending time in the radio room during the elections.

“In 2015 I was elected as a PR councillor for Roodepoort and in 2016 after the elections I was placed in Soweto as the PR councillor for two wards.”

He started working with the previous Ward 32 councillor Bongani Nkomo in 2018.

“At that point I had stayed in ward 32 for as long as I can remember. I also knew that Nkomo wanted to grow his political career and was eyeing another position. Last year I was giving the green light to stand as the DA candidate for the ward in the local government elections.”

Moloisane said the ward, which spans from Modderfontein to Buccleuch, has been neglected by city officials.

“I want to restore basic service delivery to my residents. Road repairs, grass cutting and general maintenance are high on my list. I don’t want the city to wait for residents to complain before something gets done, it should just be done.

“I want the residents to know that they have a councillor that will fight for them.”

One of the biggest problems for the ward is the high unemployment rate in Klipfontein.

“I work every day to find ways to empower young people to start their own businesses and be the change in the economy.”

He believes the turning point in the economy of South Africa is upskilling the unemployed to create their own successes.

“I hope that my little contribution as a councillor can make a difference in someone’s life.”
