The track was released after Sheldon started an alternative indie rock project to create Oceans of Angels.

Released at the end of March, Sheldon said he has already received positive feedback internationally.

Sheldon, whose passion for music started at a young age, said one of his first musical memories is of him playing the drums when he was nine.

“My family always liked music. One of my uncles played the guitar while another played the drums,” said Sheldon.

“I started playing the drums on my uncle’s drum set and then my mom eventually bought me my own.”

Sheldon then learned how to play several other instruments, including the guitar.

As he got older Sheldon played for various South African bands.

Edenvale resident and musician Sheldon Horvatic recently released his first single Shattered Soldier. He recently met with the NEWS to talk about the song and his passion for music.

He temporarily stepped out of the music scene when he decided to leave SA to work on cruise ships.

However, it wasn’t long before he found a guitar in the security locker on one of the ships he worked on.

“I asked if I could use the guitar and that’s when I started writing songs. Before then I had just played instruments for fun and in bands.”

Sheldon explained that initially, he had intended to do Shattered Soldier solo.

“A friend of mine, Tristan Wilson, got involved in the project, playing the bass guitar.”

The single was mixed and mastered by Edenvale producer Mathew Fink.

Following the release of his single, Sheldon said the feedback has been unexpected.

“Shattered soldier has been amazing; I didn’t expect it. It was number one in Australia, it’s on the Mix Fm Top 40 list and it’s being played on radio stations in countries like America and the United Kingdom.”

Sheldon said in light of the reception the song has received he will be travelling to the UK to perform a show on April 8.

“To see a good response is cool because you don’t know what to expect. To get a good response is incredible, I did not expect it.”

Speaking about the lyrics Sheldon said the words come from a place of hurt.

“I wrote it from the point of everyone’s hurting. I wrote it at a time when I was going through something bad. To me it seemed there was nothing good,” explained Sheldon.

Looking to the next leg in his musical journey, Sheldon said he is planning on releasing his second single Tell Me We’re Still on Fire soon.

“The second single will have a similar sound and the big sounding chorus but it is different to Shattered Soldiers.”
Shattered Soldiers is available on all music streaming platforms, alternatively, follow Oceans of Angels on Facebook or Instagram.
