Neil Miller, captain for the Dirt Trackers, the trail-running section of Jeppe Quondam Athletics, said each of the trails set out for the day is so user-friendly that beginners can complete them.

“To take part, you don’t need special trail running shoes, just an old pair of tekkies.”

Neil Miller, captain for the Dirt Trackers, the trail running section of Jeppe Quondam Athletics.

Miller told the NEWS there had been a big uptake of trail running in Gauteng since the pandemic hit.

While the club was started around five years ago, it had only really started taking off in the last three years.

“With road races cancelled, people were looking for other ways to keep fit,” he said.

He added that while road races were still constrained by the number of athletes able to take part, trail running was hit with much lighter restrictions.

“Trail running is not as constrained or as structured as road running. We have runners out in nature and they don’t have a set time to cross the finishing line. Trail running caters to everyone.

“Runners can walk their distance or run it or they can do a combination of both,” Miller said.
