Thomas celebrates 21 years with Edenvale SPCA
"Thomas is the madala (elder) of Edenvale, and everyone knows him because he has been with us for such a long time."
Festivities and celebrations were the order of the day at Edenvale SPCA when the branch celebrated staff member Thomas Thobejane’s 65th birthday and 21 years of service.

Although Thomas’ birthday was on February 26, Edenvale SPCA closed its doors early on February 25 as staff came together for the celebrations.
Edenvale SPCA committee member and secretary Jade de Bruyn said Thomas, who has an infectious love for animals and people in his community, joined Edenvale SPCA in May 2001.
He joined the branch as a kennel hand and driver.
“Thomas is the madala (elder) of Edenvale, and everyone knows him because he has been with us for such a long time,” said Jade.
“When we receive calls from Edenvale or our sections in Thembisa, we often get asked by the person if they can speak to Thomas directly because they know him and want his help.”
Jade said Thomas is an all-rounder and will never say no to a challenge.
“He is always willing to help where he can, he just wants everyone to be happy.”
Jade said to make the day even more special, the celebrations were kept a secret from staff members so that it would be a surprise for Thomas.
“We set up under the carport on the property and when everything was ready, we informed the other staff what was happening.
“They went to call Thomas, who was in his room resting for lunch, and he walked into a nice surprise party.”
During the celebrations, Edenvale SPCA manager Marita Acar presented a certificate to Thomas and gave a short speech.
“Thomas was emotional and so grateful for everything,” said Jade.
She said the rain on the day didn’t stop anyone from having a good time with Thomas and making his day special.
“The committee and staff would like to send a huge shout out to Thomas, and thank him for everything he has done for us, our animals and our community,” said Jade.
“We could not be more proud of the man that Thomas is today.”
The committee thanked Thomas for always being able to help and always being passionate about his job.
“Thomas is a special person and will forever be a part of our little SPCA family, even when he retires.
“We just know that as a grandpa, he will tell all his grandchildren amazing stories of all the animals he rescued and educate them and their friends on proper animal welfare in his community,” said Jade.
