New race to hit Edenvale’s streets

“A 15km race is ideal for people who have stuck to their new year’s resolutions, completed 5 and 10km races and are hoping to stay fit,” said Holton.

With the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, runners and community members can look forward to a 15km run hosted by Edenvale Rand Road Warriors (ERRW).

Set to be held on March 13 the Edenvale Blitz, the race will be a first of its kind for the club.

Chairperson of the club Sharon Holton said besides being a first for the club, the 15km race will allow ERRW to test the new Covid-19 race protocols before the club hosts its 21km and 42km races on June 26.

“We saw this race as an opportunity to see how the club would manage with the new protocols and to provide a 15km race to runners,” said Holton.

“As club chairperson, I feel excited and nervous but am looking forward to the race.”

Holton said although there are numerous 10 and 21km races, the number of 15km races are few and far between.

“A 15km race is ideal for people who have stuck to their new year’s resolutions, completed 5 and 10km races and are hoping to stay fit,” said Holton.

The route the Edenvale Rand Road Warriors 15km race will take.

ERRW’s new event will follow much of the club’s 21km half-marathon route, taking runners through Edenvale.

The race, which will be run mat to mat, will start in rolling batches of 250 at 06:00 on Linksfield Road in front of Edenvale High School.

Holton said the main sponsor for the event is StaminoGro and it will be timed by Peak Timing.

Registration for the event will be held on March 10, 11 and 12 between 13:00 and 18:00 at Edenvale Bowling Club.

Entry into this year’s race will cost participants R190; however, funds generated from the race will go towards two charities: Edenvale Care Centre Hospice and Edenvale Ferals.

Holton said parking will be available at Don Mattera Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC) at R30 and can be booked online.

She said funds generated from the parking will be donated back to the CYCC.

Suburbs runners will pass through include Marais Steyn Park, Dowerglen, Dunvegan, Elma Park and The Avenues.

“There will be over 200m of elevation for those runners who are looking forward to testing their fitness on the route,” said Holton.

The first 1 900 runners to finish will receive a medal; however, all competitors will receive a certificate.

She thanked Edenvale CPF and Mamba Security, who will provide security at the event.
