SAPS launches manhunt after suspects rob store, shoot officer

“One police officer was shot in the arm and was taken to the nearest hospital in a stable condition,” said Masondo.

Police have launched a manhunt for several armed suspects after an Edenvale business was robbed and a police officer was shot earlier today.

The robbery, which occurred at a chain store at VR Mall, occurred on January 18 at 11:10.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo said suspects armed with pistols and rifles entered the store, pointed their weapons at staff and customers and took an unconfirmed number of cellphones, laptops and an undisclosed amount of money.

Masondo said at this stage, the SAPS believed four or more suspects were involved in the crime.

He said while the suspects were fleeing the area, they noticed a police vehicle that was on routine patrol and started shooting at it.

“One police officer was shot in the arm and was taken to the nearest hospital in a stable condition,” said Masondo.

“Suspects also shot at private security guards who tried to stop them as they were escaping.”

He said this led to a high-speed chase and shootout on Voortrekker Avenue.

Despite the shootout between, Masondo said the suspects fled the area in a black Audi towards the R24.

He said besides the injured officer, no other injuries were reported.

Police have opened a case of business robbery and attempted murder for investigation.

“We appeal to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in apprehending the suspects to please call the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said Masondo.
