Black Panther star nurtures young talent

Black Panther actress offers free acting classes.

The City of Ekurhuleni, in partnership with Connie Chiume Foundation and MelaninGoddess Productions, recently hosted the Ekurhuleni Thespians Masterclasses at Dumisani Masilela Theatre in Germiston CBD.

Young people of different age groups flocked to the theatre where they met the talented actress and Norkem Park resident Connie Chiume and talented actress and singer Nothando Mabuza, as they both presented their organisations respectively.

Chiume, well known for her role in Rhythm City as MamMokete, is also a veteran actor in the South African television space.

She has worked with several respectable productions throughout her career and has become popular for her roles in Black Panther and Black is King.

Connie Chiume hands over certificates to the young actors who attended the Ekurhuleni Thespians Masterclasses at Dumisani Masilela Theatre in Germiston CBD.

Speaking to the legendary actress, she said the masterclasses are aimed at empowering young people and equipping them with the necessary skills to be successful in the industry.

“The focus was on basic skills like voice projection, how to understand your character role and persecute it accordingly.

“They could develop their plays and perform them. I believe there is a lot of talent in the country that needs to be groomed and directed carefully,” said Chiume.

She added that her foundation will continue to offer acting lessons.

The young actors who attended the masterclass presented by Connie Chiume.

“There are so many stories to tell. From what was displayed on stage, you can tell there is talent. They all narrated social issues, including drug abuse, GBV and teenage pregnancy,” said Chiume.

The attendees were awarded certificates.

Sibusiso Masondo, from Germiston Delmore informal settlement, said he learnt about articulation and projection.

“What an honour it was to meet a legend Connie. From here on I will add the awarded certificate to my CV. I now know all the basics,” said Masondo.

Musa Bhebhe, who is also an author, shared how the masterclasses equipped her for the future.

“I got interested in acting after reading Everything an Actor needs to Know and The Power of the Actor.

“After reading these, I just had to attend these classes,” said Bhebhe, who had travelled from Soweto to attend.
