Leading up to the tournament co-founder and coach of Elba, Byron Pinheiro, told the NEWS that the academy enjoyed an 11-game winning streak.

“The academy had played against some strong teams,” said Pinheiro.

He explained that this had boosted the players’ confidence and motivated them to excel in the TVT.

“It means a lot to Elba and its players to have placed where it did in the tournament,” said Makavan.

Pinheiro said when Elba took to the court, the academy’s players were playing for God, the players who were no longer with the academy, the late basketball player Johnny Domingues and most importantly the love of the sport.

Makavan pointed out that most of the teams that Elba competed against plays at a national level.

He said Elba also fielded some of the youngest players during the tournament.

“One of them, 16-year-old Thami Mtsweni drew a lot of attention from the senior players at the tournament. We expect big things from Mtsweni in the future.”

Pinheiro said although the wet weather on October 2 caused some disturbances to the tournament overall the event ran smoothly.

Looking the future Pinheiro said the academy has already started preparations for next year’s tournament.

“This year’s TVT was seven years in the making and next year we want to make it even better.”
