Morgan demands answers on water outages

“A large number of communities woke up to no water at all on Thursday. This was definitely not a 20% restriction, there was no water at all.”

Ward Clr Wendy Morgan said a notice from Rand Water stated that the entity informed various municipalities that Rand Water would be implementing stage one restrictions (20% restriction of all identified meters) on August 24 with implementation commencing on August 26.

This came after the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) blamed Rand Water for Thursday’s widespread water outage.

“Rand Water’s distribution network was under severe pressure with water demand consistently exceeding water supply,” said CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini on Thursday afternoon.

Morgan subsequently requested Rand Water to provide evidence that CoE had been informed of the stage one restrictions.

“A large number of communities woke up to no water at all on Thursday. This was definitely not a 20% restriction, there was no water at all,” Morgan informed Rand Water officials.

“From the previous seven years of no water from Northridge Windsor Street Reservoir, Gerdview and Hilltop Reservoir, Association Road Dawnview, which have both pumped and gravity fed

water to the residents when the lower-lying residents have no water, there is no incoming water from the Rand Water supply.

“The Lambton and Albemarle area and surrounds have had low water pressure fed from the Russel Road and Primrose Reservoir for three to four weeks,” Morgan informed Rand Water.

She requested a full report on the causes of the water outage.

Despite urgent requests for comment by 14:00 sent to Rand Water, no comment had been received at the time of going to print.
