Litter, fire and night activities a concern for Eastleigh resident

In recent weeks, some of the individuals have been lighting fires and camping along the road.

The activities of vagrants and recyclers have raised concerns from Eastleigh resident Genevieve Paul.

Paul who lives near the dead-end of Andries Pretorius Road said recyclers use the dead-end as an area to sort through some of their collected material while others sleep on the quiet road.

She said in recent weeks, some of the individuals have been lighting fires and camping along the road.

“Some sleep on the roads at night while others are asked to move by security, which is called by members of the community,” explained Paul

When the NEWS visited the area with Paul and Ward 18 Clr Heather Hart, remains of fires could be seen near the dead-end while debris and litter could be seen strewn about.

A makeshift sling could be seen hanging over the boundary wall, which encloses the suburb off from a piece of open land that separates the area from the Edenvale Sports Grounds.

Along this open piece of land, more debris, which included plastic, building material, a blanket and a television could be seen at a glance.

Ward 18 Clr Heather Hart said the vagrants and the recyclers near the dead-end probably included those who were removed by the City of Ekurhuleni from Horwood’s Farm and the Eastleigh Spruit on July 28.

“Although they were dispersed through the operations, they probably came to this area because it is quieter than others,” said Hart.

Hart said she would engage with the necessary departments to try and get the matter attended to.
