Estelle Ryan talks about building readership

“Use whatever works for you, but remember to give your readers something of value, whether it is a social media post or a monthly newsletter,”

USA Today bestselling author Estelle Ryan was the guest speaker for Writer 2000’s virtual meeting on July 10.

Estelle, originally from SA, has written 15 books in the Genevieve Lenard series, contributed to numerous international magazines, was the editor of a European lifestyle magazine and has had seven romance novels published under a pseudonym.

A confessed ‘coffee-shop-a-holic’, Estelle enjoys sitting and writing; however, Covid-19 restrictions have meant like many she too has had to work from home.

“Writing is a lonely profession, and many writers are struggling with isolation,” said Estelle.

She encouraged writers, new and experienced, to join support groups like Writers 2000.

As a professional writer, Estelle shared with Writers 2000 members how she maintains momentum and an income by working hard as well as smart by doing a lot herself, including the writing, cover design and marketing, and knowing when to call in professional help for seamless editing and formatting.

For Estelle, it’s vital to look after her readers and give them what they’re looking for.

She does this by writing her stories in a series rather than standalone.

“I start with careful planning, I mind-map the story and characters before I go into detailed planning of the chapters,” said Estelle.

She advised writers to:
• Look at stories that are trending (check the top 100 best sellers list).
• Write in a genre you’re comfortable with.
• Help readers identify and fall in love with characters.

Estelle reminded writers that marketing yourself and your writing is essential. This can be done on all the social media handles, including a website and a newsletter.

“Use whatever works for you, but remember to give your readers something of value, whether it is a social media post or a monthly newsletter,” advised Estelle.

Estelle’s top tips:
• Don’t limit yourself to your comfort zone, be adventurous and spread your wings.
• Identify your strengths and weaknesses.
• Discipline and a daily writing routine are essential.
• Read books written by authors you would like to emulate.
• You can publish your stories traditionally through a publisher, self-publish or online.

Estelle’s talk can be viewed on the Writers 2000 Facebook page. The page includes additional information such as Writers 2000 annual writing competition.

Entries close on August 31.

The next virtual talk will see Capetonian John Linnegar speak on the basics of editing. It will be held on August 11.
