Nkomo sceptical of City Power’s explanation for Greenstone power outages

“The power outages are extremely long so I can understand the frustration of the residents.”

After receiving feedback from City Power Ward 32 Clr Bongani Nkomo was informed that extremely long power outages in the Greenstone area are being caused by the theft of power cables.

Despite City Power’s response Nkomo is sceptical of their explanation. Nkomo said in the past he received similar explanations from cable faults to the vandalism of infrastructure.

Although the power outages are expected to continue for now Nkomo said a task team was put together to find the cause of the frequent power outages.

“The power outages are extremely long so I can understand the frustration of the residents.”

He said power outage can last anywhere from a few hours to 10 hours to up to one or two days. In Nkomo’s opinion City Power needs to do the following to prevent outages:

  • Be honest with developers about the amount of power it can supply complex developments.
  • Use its budget more efficiently.
  • Conduct maintenance on overhead cables and substations more frequently.
