Bring warmth to those in need

“Your donations will be distributed to crèches, orphanages and Edenvale Hospital where they will be shared among those in need.”

Edenvale Lioness Club appealed to the community for assistance in bringing warmth to the children and babies in need this winter and throughout the year.

President of the club Margaret van Wyk urged community members to donate baby grows, clothes and blankets their children have grown out of or no longer need.

“Your donations will be distributed to crèches, orphanages and Edenvale Hospital where they will be shared among those in need.”

Lioness Cindy Lindeman, who works with the maternity section of Edenvale Hospital, said the Lionesses need warm baby grows, vests, blankets and nappies.

“About six or eight months ago, 25 babies were born at the hospital a day,” said Cindy.

“Most of those children and mothers needed assistance.”

Apart from warm clothes, the Lioness Club also needs magazines and plush toys for patients and children at the hospital.

From donations from the community, the Lionesses can provide magazines to adult patients as reading material and toys to entertain the children.

“From walking up and down Edenvale Hospital handing out toys and magazines, I can tell you almost exactly how many hospital beds are in the hospital.”

Margaret said besides giving magazines to patients in the hospital, second-hand books and magazines are given to old-age homes.

Because many senior citizens can’t go out it provides them with a form of entertainment.

Other initiatives the Lionesses are involved in include collecting food for people in need.

Lioness Jenny McCarty said a database is kept of all the people who need assistance and whatever donations of food are provided by the community are split proportionately among those in need.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, the Lionesses would stand outside popular shops like the Karaglen SuperSPAR to collect donations.

Jenny said although the club does receive donations from the community, which it is thankful for, the club still needs more donations.

“It does not need to be financial donations but the club needs a constant supply of donations for the work it does.”

Jenny said the Lioness Club also collects second spectacle frames for Operation Brightsight, an international initiative with the focus of obtaining glasses for those in need.

The organisation also helps numerous crèches, pre-schools, Edenvale SPCA and Edenvale Ferals where it can by providing stationery, maize meal and donations of animal food and other items.

“The Lioness Club appreciates all the help we receive from the community,” said Margaret.

“When we ask for help, residents never fail to respond with willing generosity. Thank you all in advance for helping us again.”
