One killed and multiple injured in Edenvale collision

The driver of the truck was found under his vehicle having suffered multiple critical injuries, including burns from the truck that had caught alight.

A man believed to be in his 40s died and five others were injured, one critically, in a four-vehicle collision on the N12 in Western Edenvale on the evening of March 17.

Ross Campbell, a multimedia producer at ER24, said ER24 paramedics and other medical emergency services arrived at the scene at 9.13pm.

“They found a heavy truck which had collided with the concrete barrier on the side of the freeway and three light motor vehicles which had collided while trying to avoid the truck.

“One vehicle had rolled down an embankment, another ended up on the other side of the Armco barrier and a third was found in the middle of the road.”

Campbell said the driver of the truck was found under his vehicle having suffered multiple critical injuries, including burns from the truck that had caught alight. He was treated with advanced life support interventions by one of the other private services on scene and transported to a hospital for further care.

“The driver of the vehicle in the middle of the road was found down the embankment,” said Campbell. “He showed no signs of life and was declared dead on arrival. The male passenger from that vehicle was unharmed in the incident.”

Three women, one a teenager, another in her 20s and the third in her 50s from the vehicle on the other side of the Armco barrier were found to have suffered minor injuries.

All of them were treated and transported to a private hospital by ER24 for further care. Their driver, a man in his 50s, was unharmed in the incident. The driver of the car which had rolled down the embankment, a man believed to be in his 30s, suffered minor injuries and was treated and transported to hospital by a third service on the scene.

“The traffic department as well as law enforcement were on scene for further investigations,” said Campbell.
