Bedfordview VSG seeks volunteers

The Bedfordview Victim Support Group (VSG) is looking for volunteers to join their team. The VSG is a voluntarily (non-religious) group that works with victims within the Bedfordview community to address any issues that result from their exposure to crime.

Volunteers work with victims to help them deal with various levels of trauma. The VSG works with the Bedfordview SAPS and falls under the Bedfordview Community Police Forum (BCPF) structure.

To join the VSG, residents should:

• Have experience (no matter how little) with trauma debriefing/narrative counselling.
• Have an interest in helping people.
• Have a naturally empathetic nature.
• Be good at building relationships.
• Have excellent listening skills.
• Be non-judgmental.
• Having multilingual abilities would be an advantage as a large number of our victims affected by crime are not English speaking.

To apply to be a volunteer with the VSG, send a short email with justification as to how you can positively contribute to this community group. Those interested should also be available to meet with the team leader for an interview to discuss the responsibilities and accountabilities of being a volunteer counsellor.

Volunteers also need to complete personal information and indemnity form as well as have their fingerprints taken for police clearance.

Those wanting to be volunteers within the VSG need to be South African citizens and be willing to volunteer for the VSG for 12 months.

The volunteered time would be used to:

• Conduct phone calls from the VSG office at the police station during duty week. The frequency of these duty periods will depend on the number of volunteer counsellors available.
• Attend bi-monthly team meetings at the VSG office or virtually.
