Hart raises concerns on proposed cellphone mast

“I strongly believe the mast will affect the value of the properties near the mast and perhaps even those a few blocks away.”

The proposed construction of a cellular mast has led to Ward 18 Clr Heather Hart raising concerns regarding its impact on the surrounding community.

The cellular mast is proposed to be constructed on portion 25 of ERF number 95 of Tenth Avenue. If constructed, it will be a 35m tall tree mast on a 10x10m base.

Hart said she was notified by the applicants, Kamohelo Land Management Consultants, of their intentions on February 8.

“Unlike previous scenarios, the argument of proximity to residential properties and the unknown effect on residents cannot be used as the proposed area is longer zoned for residential use.

“However, I strongly believe the mast will affect the value of the properties near the mast and perhaps even those a few blocks away.”

Hart said in an email correspondence with the NEWS on February 8 that she had received hundreds of complaints regarding a proposal of the mast.

She said at 35m, the mast would more than likely be one of the tallest objects in Edenvale and could be seen from across town.

She said in terms of compliance everything appears to be done by the books by the applicants. Despite compliance, Hart hopes to discuss the provision made for power outages and the level of sound caused by the generators.

When asked by the NEWS where she would propose constructing a cellular mast, Hart, who lives in Hurlyvale, suggested a central location closer to Edenvale CBD.

“I would select a location further away from residential areas, perhaps near Eden Mall, where the mast would be more hidden.”

Hart encouraged community members who feel strongly about the mast to get involved in the public participation process and submit their feedback to the applicants and the City of Ekurhuleni.

Objections need to be submitted in writing to the council and the applicant within 28 days after January 26, which is on February 23.
