CoE replies to a letter regarding parks maintenance

Maintenance schedules will be available at the City’s customer care centres where the community can access them.

In a letter to the editor regarding the lack of park maintenance in Rhodesfield, a resident highlighted that children were risking their lives for playtime since the parks are overgrown.

This resident noted that his neighbourhood children were forced to play soccer in the streets, which caused a traffic hazard and put their lives at risk since the park’s grasses and weeds hindered them from having fun.

After a request to the City of Ekurhuleni was sent in January, their acting spokesperson, Solly Mashabela, replied on January 22 by stating: “Due to the festive season break and the amount of rainfall received over the months of December 2020 and January 2021, there is a backlog with regards to horticultural maintenance and arboriculture maintenance across the City of Ekurhuleni.”

Mashabela said this is an annual norm to have these backlogs between January and March. “In recent years, this period of the year has recorded more severe rainfalls accompanied by high temperatures, which is attributed to the changing weather patterns. Vegetation thrives in these conditions.”

The service providers appointed for cutting grass are working on areas allocated to them while internal teams are also doing horticultural maintenance.

“Maintenance schedules will be available at the City’s customer care centres where the community can access them.

We are also aware of the high number of complaints, and the City is working hard to resolve the complaints.”
The City urges the community to be patient and bear with backlogs during this busiest time of the year.

“The City apologises for the inconvenience caused to our customers,” Mashabela concluded.
