Top young learners represent Gauteng at school crime prevention national debate

The competition, dubbed Youth4SaferSouthAfricaDebate, was part of efforts led by Safer South Africa Foundation (SSAF) to intensify crime prevention at schools.

Learners from schools in communities troubled by gangsterism, bullying, violence and substance abuse were selected by their peers over the weekend to represent Gauteng at the youth crime prevention school debate competition featuring seven provinces.
The finale was held on December 12.
The competition, dubbed Youth4SaferSouthAfricaDebate, was part of efforts led by Safer South Africa Foundation (SSAF) to intensify crime prevention at schools.
This was done in collaboration with the SAPS, metro police departments, Gauteng Traffic Police, National Prosecuting Authority, magistrates, correctional services, Department of Basic Education, SA Human Rights Commission and the Banking Association South Africa.
The five learners who represented Gauteng were Kapemba Fulunga, Tshepo Moloi, Angela Ramotseoa, Futune Khanyi and Mfuneko Mabena.
The learners were selected to participate in the debate tournament after they performed the best in an essay competition about what they believed could be done about the crime situation at their schools and within their communities, respectively.
The Youth4SaferSouthAfricaDebate tournament was a partnership between The Training Firm and SSAF.
The #Youth4SaferSouthAfricaDebate was part of the Criminal Justice Programme (CJP) run by SSAF and offered at schools within crime hot spots.
So far, 80 learners were exposed to the CJP in Gauteng, while nationally 73 schools and about 5 000 learners were reached.
