Illiondale Residents Association representative Linda McKenzie said over the years the open piece of land became a problem attracting vagrants, land invaders and opportunistic criminals.

Last July the Sebenza SAPS, private security companies AfriForum and community members worked together in a joint operation to target criminal elements on the piece of land.

The NEWS reported that five individuals were living in the veld at the time.

A variety of tools, electronics, mattresses, bedding and clothing was also found in the veld.

McKenzie said several operations were held since last July yielding similar results.

“Tools used to break into homes are often found in the veld, as well as items suspected to be taken from residential properties left abandoned.

“Residents of Illiondale started living in fear so many of them are happy with the news of the development.”

McKenzie said resident still want to know the following:

  • When the Margaret Road would be repaired.
  • Whether or not, Ceci Awrett Road, a proposed access road, will be able to handle the increased traffic volume.
  • Whether municipal infrastructure such as sewerage and stormwater drains will cope.

McKenzie said much of the infrastructure in Illiondale is aged and needs to be maintained.

She said IRA committee members questioned how increased traffic in the area and more homes would affect the community.

A request was sent to the City of Ekurhuleni on August 13 requesting comment by August 14.
