International assistance benefits Little Eden

“The upgrades will see the number of residents accommodated at each home changed.”

With some international assistance, Little Eden’s Elvira Rota Village in Bapsfontein is set to get some much-needed renovations.

Scheduled to start on August 17, the aim is to upgrade the facilities for the benefit of the changing needs of the residents and for the long-term sustainability of the society.

“Some of the buildings at the home were erected almost 50 years ago and at that time, these structures were suitable for accommodating a smaller number of residents who were much younger back in the ’70s,” said CEO Xelda Rohrbeck.

She said now residents are older and the majority are in wheelchairs.

“Their changing needs, protection and comfort become a pressing priority which the management team and the board have to seriously consider.

“The upgrades will see the number of residents accommodated at each home changed.”

Upgrades and renovations will create a more spacious environment for residents and will include a medical and frail care facility commencing at a later stage during phase two.

Xelda said the renovation project was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which forced some services to be halted.

The building site will be completely isolated, with no interaction between the contractors and residents and staff of the society.

This will be done to limit the risk related to the pandemic.

“Additional protocols will be implemented to secure and isolate the site with measures such as double fencing.”

The society is thankful for the international support it appealed to community members to continue assisting where they can.

The pandemic directly affected the society by increasing expenditure related to the essential, additional preventative and hygiene measures that have been implemented.

The income received by the society continues to decrease, putting pressure on the society’s financial resources.

“The continued support from long-standing supporters and the local community enables the society to keep its doors open.
