Crime Stats: truck hijacking lands Bedfordview in top 30 stations

Crimes that showed an increase in Bedfordview for the 2019/2020 financial year were murder, attempted murder, common assault, car hijacking and business robbery.

Bedfordview Police Station has once again featured in the top 30 stations nationally for the number of truck hijackings in the area.

Although the number of truck hijackings decreased by 32.1 per cent from 28 incidents in 2018/2019 financial year to 19 in 2019/2020, the station still placed seventh nationally.

Spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS Capt André de Jager urged companies in the logistics field to educate truck drivers.

“If a driver is allocated a specific route to travel, they should not deviate from that route,” he said.

The spokesperson added that truck drivers should not pull off the road when instructed to do so by other vehicles such as small 1 400 bakkies.

“Drivers should rather proceed to an area which is safe if they need to pull over for any reason,” he said.

De Jager said truck drivers should always carry emergency contact details with them should they feel unsafe and should never pick up hitchhikers along the road.

The annual crime stats were released last week. Crimes that showed an increase in Bedfordview for the 2019/2020 financial year were murder, attempted murder, common assault, car hijacking and business robbery.

Sexual offences in the area decreased.
