The Importance of Good Character

One of the most vivid ways in which we strive to bring our school’s vision to life is through our internal recognition system, the Daniel Awards.

These awards honour learners who live out their faith the way that the Biblical Daniel did. The philosophy behind the Daniel Awards is best described in the words of Alan Frow (a previous Pastor of Love Reaching Communities Church, the founders of our school):

‘There are times when it would seem simpler just to settle for great academic results, victorious sporting results, and social success. The pressure to achieve good results can so easily erode at our values, which are far more Christ-centred and people-orientated than achievement-based.

Daniel had a wisdom that gave him favour with kings (Daniel 2:48). Christian education should aim to raise young men and women to become leaders in their respective fields for the sake of His kingdom.

Secondly, Daniel used his favour for God’s glory, not his own. His position did not go to his head.

Thirdly, he was uncompromising. Daniel would not bow to worship the King even though his life was under serious threat. We don’t just want to raise leaders. We want to raise leaders who fear and obey God. We want to raise men and women with backbone!

Fourthly, he was an influencer. Leadership is the ability to influence others rather than be influenced. We want to raise young men and women who will speak God’s truth.’

Every member of The King’s School staff holds to this vision deeply, and we employ intense rigour to bring it to life in our school. We endeavour to equip children to increase in wisdom (academic), stature (sport), favour with man (discipline) and favour with God. Many children have come to us and found a haven. We provide pastoral care and our small classes ensure individual teaching. Although we want our learners to excel, we do not give up on those who struggle academically.

We celebrate every success, knowing that for one child achieving 50 per cent would be as much of a victory as achieving 80 per cent would be for another. We nurture the whole change and encourage an interest in the arts through our dynamic drama department.
