Modderfontein has emerged as a crime hot spot in the Sebenza SAPS precinct along with Croydon and Kempton Park West.
According to Sebenza SAPS spokesperson Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso, the implementation of a national hard lockdown at the end of March brought with it a decrease in criminal activity in the area.
“In May, however, crime in the area covered by the station increased as lockdown restrictions were lifted. By the end of May and during June the increase was significant,” she said.
Sgt Tsotsotso added the increase could be seen in hijackings of courier vehicles and at residential properties.

Another area of concern for the station is the increase of common robberies with criminals targeting runners in the Modderfontein area.
“Residents who run in Modderfontein are asked to be vigilant at all times; do not carry valuables such as expensive watches with you when you run and as far as possible have someone follow you in a car when you run,” Sgt Tsotsotso said.
Motorists should maintain situational awareness at all times but more especially when arriving or leaving their homes.
She advised that when stopping at traffic lights or dark intersections motorists remain alert.
“Do not stop your car at the side of the road to answer phone calls; rather make sure of headsets or in car Bluetooth systems to avoid stopping along the road,” Sgt Tsotsotso said.
The Sebenza precinct has seen a decrease in the number of domestic violence cases reported.
“We want to urge residents to be patient with each other. Understand and support each other. We know times are hard and stressful. Be mindful of what your partner is going through.
“It’s easy to get caught up in everything that’s going on around us and it’s important to not let our anger and frustration escalate towards those we live with,” Sgt Tsotsotso said.
