Be the Change and stand against bullying

“Feeling powerless and stuck leads to isolation, depression, low self-esteem and sometimes suicide.”

May is bullying awareness month and RADA, a NPO, will be shifting its focus to the topic of bullying and its effects.
Public relations officer of RADA, Tracey Pitout, said since its inception, the organisation’s intention has always been to start conversations on real-world issues.
“There is no doubt that bullying is a worldwide problem affecting more than the youth. This issue is evident on the playground, in the boardroom and on the road with rage-filled drivers,“ said Tracey.
Tracey explained how the fear-driven behaviour can take on many shapes and forms including physical, verbal, cyber and social.
Each of them are intense and debilitating.
“Feeling powerless and stuck leads to isolation, depression, low self-esteem and sometimes suicide.”
According to the PR officer, research has shown one in six children worldwide are faced with bullying and more specifically, cyberbullying.
“These statistics are from reported cases only. “
Tracey explained why people bully others.
“For the bully, it’s all about regaining a sense of power and control in their lives. It is a retaliation for the pain that they are feeling.
“The problem is making yourself feel better by making someone else feel worse is not the solution.
“The tormentor, the victim, and the spectator all play a role and have control over how to respond to situations, so break the cycle, stand up for yourself and stand up for others. “
She said RADA promotes self-responsibility and self-awareness, which are important attributes that can redefine the way we treat others.
“Respect, tolerance and understanding of others are critical in creating a safe and peaceful environment for all, “ added Tracey.
