Ward 66 is bustling with projects since September, and residents can expect massive improvement at the end of these projects.
Clr Carlos Da Rocha said this year saw the most work being done in Ward 66.
“The ward has turned into a construction site. It has been an inconvenience for residents, but it is for the good of the ward. All these projects are necessary,” said Da Rocha.
The City of Joburg embarked on a sewer line upgrade from Troyeville to upper Kensington and across Bertrams to Bellevue.
“These kind of projects are expensive but needed as most of the sewer lines in the area are old clay pipes and roots started growing through them. With densification it was quite important to upgrade the lines,” said Da Rocha.
He added that four main roads, Berea Road, North Avenue, Bezuidenhout Avenue and Gordon Road, were resurfaced.
“These roads were crumbling. Viljoen Street was also resurfaced. This road was not a capital project. It fell within operational projects. I have been asking for these roads to be done for several years.”
Another exciting project that has kicked off is the Indlulamithi Project which Joburg Development Agency (JDA) started in Muller Street in Bellevue.
“This project was motivated by the public sector in partnership with JDA,” said Da Rocha.
“These projects have brought employment to the ward. More than 100 local residents were employed for a few months and six small local businesses received tenders,” said Da Rocha.
“This does not mean the work is done. The ward still has other service delivery needs to which I will tend to.”
