Hijacking suspects nabbed along Soweto Highway

Two Soweto Highway suspects arrested after shoot-out with police.

Joburg Flying Squad arrested two suspects on charges of attempted murder and possession of a stolen vehicle after a shoot-out ensued with police on the Soweto Highway on July 23.

“Officers received information of a grey BMW that was hijacked in Bez Valley. The vehicle was spotted at the edge of the Soweto Highway and Eben Cuyler Drive in Diepkloof,” said Joburg Flying Squad spokesperson Richard Sambo.

According to Sambo, three suspects who were inside the vehicle shot at the police as soon as police vehicles approached.

“Upon seeing the police, the suspects started shooting and officers returned fire. One suspect fled the scene and the other two were eventually arrested,” added Sambo.

He said one of the arrested suspects was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“He was transported under police guard, while his accomplice was detained at Diepkloof SAPS. Investigations are underway and both suspects, aged 23 and 29, are due to appear soon in the Protea Magistrate’s Court.”
