Multi-faceted sports coaching course to kick-off

A breed of new coaches are promised as Wits Sport aims to bring innovative coaching techniques to the fore.

Novice and experienced coaches will be the focus as Wits Sport once again opens its doors to a premier multi-faceted sports coaching programme from June 12 to 15.

Offered as a first level high-performance coaching programme, the course aims to bring new, dynamic and immensely powerful coaching methodologies to the fore in South Africa.

Its chief facilitator, Rob Yates, said the programme is not an exclusive theory-based one that leaves coaches with some great ideas, but little in the way of proven demonstrable behaviours.

“In this programme coaches roll up their sleeves and execute theory into practice, while being mentored by one of our globally acclaimed Coach Educators,” explained Yates. “With the programme’s design based upon a lengthy study of what is currently offered to coaches, the programme is generically modelled to feed into all disciplines across the sports spectrum, and focuses on the how of high-performance coaching, as opposed to the usual outdated methods.”

He said coaches can expect results as they will spend over 50 per cent of their time on the programme in mentored coaching activities over a four-day period. “They will be observed at all times by our globally acclaimed Coach Educators, who will provide accurate feedback and ensure that everything covered is actionable by the coach.

“In addition to this, is the peer feedback and engagement which will provide participants with the opportunity to learn from each other.

“This addresses the fact that there is more to be learnt from outside of a sport than within it when high-performance is the goal,” said Yates. He added that recent participants on the programme have ranged from a Currie Cup and Varsity Cup-winning coach, right down to individuals with little or limited coaching experience.

“Due to the methodology of the programme, each individual coach gets challenged to their own level, making it relevant no matter what level of previous coaching experience they might have had,” he said.
