Students from Kensington set to meet Nobel Prize-winners

Kensington's very own scientists set to jet off to Germany for distinguished Nobel Laureate Meeting.

Kensington residents Tanita Ramburuth-Hurt and Michael Sarkis are among 20 young scientists from South Africa selected to attend a meeting of Nobel Laureates and young scientists in Germany in June.

Chosen alongside them to attend the meeting in the town of Lindau is fellow University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) student Francis Otieno.

The prestigious honour was bestowed on them after they were nominated by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF).

Both Jeppe High School alumni, Sarkis and Ramburuth-Hurt are currently pursuing their Masters of Science in Physics degrees.

This love for maths and science was developed while attending Jeppe High School for Boys and Jeppe High School for Girls, respectively.

The South African contingent was selected from various universities around the country and comprises 10 men and 10 women.

They will join 580 other young scientists from 88 countries in meeting the 42 Nobel Laureates at the 69th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting scheduled for June 30 to July 5.

The students will attend a six-day programme, which includes a number of lectures and panel discussions, with key topics, including cosmology, laser physics and gravitational waves.

The young scientists will also be given an opportunity to meet with the Nobel Prize-winners during meals, daily science walks and other social events.
