The incident took place when the 23-year-old victim got up to answer to a knock at the door at about 3am, while her two children, aged one and five, were asleep in bed, according to police.

“She asked who was at the door and a man responded saying she should open up,” said Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan.

“Thinking that it is her brother, the woman complied and two men with blood stains on their clothes forced themselves into the room. One of them had a knife and ordered her to take off her clothes.”

Jordaan said the two attackers took turns raping the woman, in full view of the two children, who’d been woken up by their mother’s desperate screams shortly after her ordeal started.

“Her two children woke up and saw the whole ordeal. After raping her, the men took her cellphone, bank cards and an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene.

“The victim gave a description of the suspects to officers, who later arrested a 32-year-old man near the Denver railway station. The woman identified him as one of her attackers and he was placed in custody at Cleveland SAPS.

“A case of house robbery and rape was opened against the suspect and he appeared in court 14 of the Joburg Magistrate’s Court on February 11. The case will be investigated by the Joburg East Cluster Trio Task Team. The second suspect is still at large, but we hope to make a breakthrough in arresting him soon.”

This is the latest incident of violent rape in the Cleveland policing precinct after a 72-year-old woman was raped in Kensington on February 4, as previously reported in the EXPRESS.

Members of the public are urged to come forward with any information on the missing suspect.

Cleveland SAPS can be contacted at 011 607 574/6. It is unclear why the suspects had blood on their clothing or where it may have originated from.
