‘Illegal dumping costs millions’ – Neuren Pietersen

Wayne Minnaar confirmed the vehicle was impounded and a fine issued.

Illegal dumping costs the City of Joburg in excess of R80-million a year, according to Ward 118 Clr Neuren Pietersen.

He made this remark after a vehicle was impounded following an alleged attempt by a man to dump illegally.

Pietersen said resident Rob Crawford noticed a 10-ton tipper truck with a load making its way to the open fields near Bruma Park on January 8.

“Crawford contacted a private security company and other relevant authorities to act. Illegal dumping is considered to be in contravention of city by-laws.

“JMPD impounded the vehicle and the man was fined R3 000. If caught three times, we will have his vehicle confiscated permanently.”

JMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wayne Minnaar confirmed the vehicle was impounded and a fine issued.

“The vehicle was impounded to be checked for other traffic offences and crime-related activities.”

Minnaar, like Pietersen, cited the cost of illegal dumping in the city is excessive.

“The cost to the city is huge as a result of illegal dumping,” said Minnaar.
