Police retrieve unlicensed firearm

“Police will arrest those who are found with unlicensed firearms."

Cleveland SAPS arrested a 35-year-old suspect for possession of unlicensed firearm at Denver informal settlement on October 4.

Spokesperson for Cleveland SAPS, Captain Johan Jordaan, said police officers were patrolling the area when they spotted men behaving suspiciously.

“They ordered them to stop and asked to search them. Upon searching them they found a 9mm Norinco pistol in one of the suspect’s possession. The serial number was also filed off,” he said.

The 35-year-old suspect was arrested and taken to Cleveland SAPS, where he was detained.

“He is expected to appear in court soon while investigations continue,” said Jordaan.

Jordaan reminded residents that it is illegal to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“Police will arrest those who are found with unlicensed firearms. You can be fined, sentenced or even both, depending on the case,” he said.

Jordaan said the following requirements apply when a person applies for a firearm licence, renewal, permit or authorisation:

• The applicant must complete the SAPS 271 form (application to possess a firearm) or SAPS 518(a), which is an application for the renewal of a licence, permit or authorisation.

• Two recent colour photographs of the applicant.

• Certified copy of the applicant’s identity document or passport.

• Certified copy of the applicant’s competency certificate.

• Certified copy of the applicant’s permanent residence (non-SA citizen).

• A motivation indicating reasons for the need to possess the firearm and the applicant’s continued compliance with the requirements of the original licence, permit or authorisation.

Relevant forms are available at the designated firearms officer at the police stations.
