SAPS urges motorists to be vigilant

JEPPE - Police management warn residents to be alert.

The Johannesburg East Police Cluster management is concerned about the spate of car hijackings and warned motorists to be more vigilant.

Jeppe police spokesperson Captain Richard Munyai said there has been an increase in areas like Bez Valley, Jeppestown in the Jeppe SAPS precinct and at all stations that the Joburg East cluster falls under including Cleveland and Yeoville.

Munyai said the victims are being hijacked while sitting inside the cars on the streets at night.

“We are appealing to people not to sit inside the cars while visiting their relatives. Rather go inside the house or drive to a safer place where there are more people around.”

“Motorists should also be observant when stopping at the traffic lights. If they suspect that they are being followed by a car while driving home they must not stop and get out of the car to open the gates.

“They must drive pass and go to the nearest police station or call for help,” he said.

There is also a new trend where criminals are targeting cars that are parked on the streets especially where there is an event.

“Criminals are aware that the cars are fitted with alarms and they will fiddle with the car so that the alarm is activated and when the owners come out to check what is happening they would strike and hijack them,” he said.

Munyai said they are also sending a stern warning to those opening false cases.

“Mostly it is to claim for insurance. These people will be charged with perjury – they will be arrested and prosecuted,” said Munyai.
