Jeppe police officers nab five suspects for possession of firearms in Doorfontein

JOBURG – Five suspects are expected to appear in court for robbery.

Jeppe police officers arrested five suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms on Error Street in Doornfontein on 20 April.

According to the station’s spokesperson, Captain Richard Munyai, police received a tip-off from a restaurant owner. “Police officials proceeded to the given address and found the five men. They searched them and found them in possession of three firearms, a pistol, two revolvers and 16 live rounds [ammunitions],” said Munyai.

Munyai said the arrested suspects are linked to an alleged business robbery which took place on the same day.

“The complainant alleged that she was inside her restaurant when five men entered and started to play a game of pool. She noticed that one of them was carrying a firearm. There were people from a church eating food and when they finished eating and left the building the five men allegedly took out their firearms and pointed them at her and her employer,” said Munyai.

Munyai said the suspects allegedly demanded the complainant’s bag.

“She told them that she did not have a bag and they ordered her to open the money till which she did. They also searched the complainant and her employer and allegedly took their cellphones. The suspects took the keys of the shop before fleeing the scene.”

They were arrested and taken to Jeppe Police Station where they were charged with business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Munyai said the two revolvers’ serial numbers were filed off. “The suspects may be linked to other robberies and murders around Doornfontein.”

They are expected to appear in Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court while investigations continue. Details: Jeppe Police Station 011 624 6066.
