The Advancement to Independence through Movement Centre in Kensington gives purpose to the disabled

KENSINGTON – Workshop gives back to the disabled.

The Advancement to Independence through Movement Centre is a workshop for the physically disabled in Kensington.

The workshop was established in 1986 and enables work activities, skills training and personal development for people with disabilities.

“We provide meaningful work for 35 participants, all with various disabilities. We also provide physiotherapy, art and literacy classes, all of which improve the quality of the participants’ lives. We also provide a daily, balanced meal for the participants,” said Bernice Michalec, the manager of the centre.

Participants are involved in projects which include assembling and packaging of products. The aim of the projects is to alleviate poverty and generate income for the participants.

The centre is always in need of donations and sponsorships as the projects only bring in limited funds. Participants create handmade products they sell for income including bins and scarves.

The centre has also begun sewing lessons.

“The class just recently started and still is a small group. We are planning to sell the products and also invite disabled people who are interested in sewing to come and learn,” said Michalec.

The workshop has a secondhand shop in Darras Centre in Kensington where community members can purchase items.
