Johannesburg east cluster arrest drivers for drinking and driving

JOBURG - Suspects are expected to appear in court for committing different crimes.

The police stations under the Johannesburg cluster have arrested more than 40 drivers for driving their vehicles while under the influence of liquor over the Easter weekend. Police stations such as Jeppe, Cleveland and Parkview together with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) were all over the cluster do. Other 44 suspects were arrested for crime ranging from possession of unlicensed firearms to rape.

Other suspects were arrested for the following crimes:

  • 48 for drinking and driving;
  • 12 for assault grievous bodily harm;
  • 6 for assault common;
  • 9 for theft;
  • 2 for drunk in public;
  • 4 for malicious damage to property;
  • 1 for possession of counter fake money;
  • 7 for possession of unlicensed firearms;
  • 1 for possession of stolen goods;
  • 1 for dealing in liquor;
  • 1 for possession of drugs;
  • 1 suspect for rape;
  • 1 for house breaking and theft;
  • 4 suspects for shoplifting;
  • 1 suspect for contempt of court;
  • 2 for business breaking;
  • 1 for armed robbery;
  • 2 for pointing of a firearm;
  • 1 for fraud.

“Most of the suspects had already appeared in different courts while others are yet to appear. Some have paid fine and bail while others are reminded in court while investigations are still continuing,” said Captain Richard Munyai.
