Mrs Vee’s cup of words

Save the rainbow nation...

The dream of a Rainbow Nation is slowly fading in front of our eyes.

Racist comments have become a hot topic in our society, creating discomfort for many. We are a country with a painful history and we should aim to reconcile as a nation. We may not want to admit it, but we still have a long way to go on this journey of forgiveness.

DA leader Helen Zille recently tweeted comments that have raised eyebrows and caused many to question her beliefs as a political leader. But I don’t want to get into details about arguments that were splashed all over social media and newspapers about the rise of racist comments.

My concern comes from a place of pure humanity. Was the Rainbow Nation dream ever true?

Do you remember … ‘South Africa we love you our beautiful land, let’s show the whole world we can build peace in our land’?

When I was a little girl, this line made me believe that I could befriend anyone despite their colour and race. Fast forward to 2017 and I find myself wondering how I can tell my child that not everyone is your friend.

As much as we pretend not to see where this road is heading, we all know it’s not a pretty one. Fear has surfaced in South Africa and the Rainbow Nation has been broken.

We need to do some introspection and ask this difficult question: “Which road am I taking?” Are you part of the small group that still believes in the dream of a Rainbow Nation or are you someone who wants to repeat the history of pain?

Remember reconciliation only works if hearts are true and those who talk about it, really mean it. #SaveTheRainbowNation
