R8 000 cash stolen at Kwa Mai Mai

JEPPE – Three suspects are expected to appear in Johannesburg Magistrates' Court for an alleged armed robbery.

Jeppe police officers arrested three men in connection with an armed robbery at the Kwa Mai Mai market in Jeppestown on 27 March.

According to spokesperson for Jeppe Police Station, Captain Richard Munyai, a 32-year-old man was counting money at his business premises in Berea Street when he heard a knock on the door.

“When he opened the door, he found that it was his friend who asked him for R10. He gave him R10 and he left. The complainant continued to count the money,” said Munyai.

He said the complainant heard another knock on the door and four men allegedly entered. “Among the men was the friend he had just given money to earlier on. The men hit the complainant with an unknown object on the head and took a bag containing R8 000 in cash and a Nedbank card,” said Munyai.

The complainant’s neighbours heard him screaming and came to his rescue. Together they apprehended one of the suspects while the other three fled the scene.

“Police were called and they managed to trace two other suspects and arrested them,” said Munyai.

He said the fourth suspect was still at large with the money.

“The arrested suspects aged 25, 27 and 32 were detained at Jeppe Police Station and will appear in Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon while police investigations are continuing.”
