Troyeville in need of better service delivery

TROYEVILLE – Residents demand better service delivery in Troyeville.

Troyeville residents feel they are a forgotten community. They say the suburb is filthy and falling apart.

“People just dump everywhere and they seem not to even care about the filth they cause,” said resident Fatima Mohamed.

“The grass is overgrown on the pavement. Some residents have decided to take upon themselves to cut the grass.”

She said the problems began when owners of properties started renting them out. “Tenants tend not to respect their accommodation and owners also just don’t care how their property is being handled, just as long as rent money is paid.”

Pavements are always filthy with rubbish in Troyeville.

It is believed that overcrowding is a problem in the area and puts a heavy strain on the power supply. “You find a house that has more than three families living in it. The substation was working fine for years but since the overcrowding started, it has caused problems for the area.”

The situation is a challenge to homeowners in the suburb because it also affects their property’s value. The residents are demanding better service delivery and bylaw enforcement in the area.

Ward 66 councillor Carlos Da Rocha claimed that he has not forgotten about Troyeville. “The illegal dumping issue is not a case of me not caring, I have a big ward to deal with and when I deal with my ward I deal with it as a whole. I’m constantly pushing for service delivery.”

He added that he had initiated the Green Ward 66 project to deal with these issues. “The filth in my ward is what got me concerned about the conditions of Ward 66. But for the project to be a success and have a clean ward, I need the community to play its role as well. They need to stop dumping rubbish on the pavements,” said Da Rocha.

Resident Fatima Mohamed points out one of the problematic spots that always has rubbish.

He added that some community members in Bez Valley had been supportive of the project and regularly conducted clean-ups in the suburb.

Da Rocha claimed that he was not aware of overcrowding in Troyeville but with the installation of a new substation, power outages should be a thing of the past.
