Showing solidarity with cancer survivors

KENSINGTON – Park Meadow supports Cansa Shavathon

The Keurboom Care Home based in Belgravia hosted a Cansa Shavathon at Park Meadows Shopping Centre on 25 February.

Shoppers were encouraged to shave or spray their hair for a good cause.

The shaving or spraying of hair is seen as a sign of solidarity with cancer survivors because one of the common side effects of undergoing chemotherapy is hair loss.

Nick van Tonder, a life coach, author, and musician was the master of ceremonies at the shavathon. Rand Aid Private College pupils were the stylists for the day.

All money raised at Cansa Shavathons around the country go towards funding the care and support programmes that Cansa offers, mainly rendered at the care centres.

“I would like to thank Park Meadows for hosting us again this year. Also the team and people who came to support us. They have been very supportive of Keurboom Care Home,” said Sandi van Tonder, chairperson of the liaison committee.

The Cansa Keurboom Care Home is a sanctuary for cancer patients going through treatment. It was established in 1975 by the Rotary Club in Johannesburg when a need arose for a place where patients could stay while receiving treatment for cancer. The home accommodates patients from out of town who are undergoing treatment. Patients receive free transportation to and from the treatment centres as well as meals.
