Residents damage property in Jeppe

JOBURG – Another violent attack against foreign nationals.

Looting of shops and public violence flared up in Jeppestown on 27 February.

Jeppe police spokesperson Captain Richard Munyai said police officials were monitoring the area.

“Police received information that there will be more shop looting, so we deployed more members to patrol the area. Members from other clusters and public order policing are working around the clock,” said Munyai.

This was another violent attack against foreign nationals which happened a day after the incident at Denver hostel where residents targeted shops owned by foreigners, accusing them of benefitting from illegal electricity connections from the hostel.

Some foreign nationals sought safety at the police station. “About five people from different countries came to the station as they feared for their lives,” said Munyai.

Only one person was arrested in connection with the violence. “Police arrested a 36-year-old man for malicious damage to property,” said Munyai.
