Woman recognised for vegetable garden

JUMPERS – Meet a woman who makes a difference in her community.

A community leader at Jumpers informal settlement, Nomphelo Zozo, was recently honoured for her vegetable garden and for making a difference to the community by Ward 118 councilor Neuren Pietersen, residents of Jumpers informal settlement as well as friends and family recently.

Zozo’s vegetable garden is used as a source of food and should help reduce financial problems within the informal settlement. She started it in 2013 with other residents of the community.

“This used to be a dumping space. Most of the residents don’t work and food is expensive, so I thought of cleaning up the area and starting a vegetable garden,” said Zozo.

She said she was currently unemployed. “Having a job doesn’t mean signing a contract at a particular workplace. This is our job because most of us have nothing to do every day.”

She encouraged other residents to join and plant their own vegetables. “The vegetable garden can help the residents save money. This garden will help everyone to save. We can’t afford to buy meat all the time.”
