DA angered that Gauteng traffic police and motorbikes have been flown down for Sona

JOBURG – DA says David Makhura has shown himself to be no more than a servant of Luthuli House – and not one to the people of Gauteng.

The DA has strongly criticised the move by Gauteng premier to deploy provincial resources for the State of the Nation Address (Sona) in Cape Town.

According to the DA leader in Gauteng, John Moodey, the provincial traffic police sent 20 officers and 18 motorbikes to strengthen the State presence at this year’s Sona, which will he held later today.

“This comes at a time in which President Jacob Zuma has requested 441 SANDF officers to assist in maintaining law and order,” Moodey said in a statement.

He went on to question why the provincial traffic police who, according to Moodey, should be serving Gauteng’s many freeways, have been moved out of the province to assist with the Sona. “The Western Cape and the City of Cape Town are fully capacitated to manage Sona with their provincial traffic police and Metro police officers,” reads Moodey’s statement.

He also highlighted that this was a first. “Gauteng Premier David Makhura must explain this sudden and bizarre move, which is not only a waste of valuable public money but denies residents the safety and security they are entitled to on our provincial roads,” Moodey said.

He lambasted Makhura and said he has shown himself to be no more than a servant of Luthuli House – and not one to the people of Gauteng.
