House robberies spike in Yeoville

YEOVILLE – Police are urging residents to be vigilant.

Six cases of house robbery have been opened at Yeoville Police Station since 1 January.

According to Yeoville police spokesperson Captain Sifiso Mabizela, the suspects pretended to be looking for rooms to rent or asking for directions. The suspects targeted landlords or normal residents after having obtained personal information about them.

“They are either armed with firearms or use pepper sprays. Victims are often tied up and money, flat-screen TV sets and cellphones are common items that are taken,” said Mabizela.

He appealed to the community to ensure that doors are always locked at night and to avoid opening or welcoming strangers into their premises. “Residents must not keep huge amounts of cash in their house,” cautioned Mabizela.
