Setting Christmas into motion

Kensington – Resident gather at Rhodes Park for some Christmas spirit.

Kensington Renegades kick-started the Christmas spirit in Rhodes Park with Carols in my Park on 3 December.

Kensington Renegades is a group of residents who have an interest in the Kensington community. Residents came together to listen to the Jeppe High School for Girls choir singing Christmas carols. The event was all about giving to and sharing with the less fortunate.

“We are happy that the community came in numbers. We have been planning for weeks and we are touched by what we see. This means next year it must be bigger and better,” said organiser, Rachelle Potgieter.

Kensington Lions Club members, Rogini David and Natascha Tyler also came to support Carols in my Park.

All the proceeds from the evening went to the St Giles Home for the physically disabled. The home caters for those disabled by accidents, strokes, congenital conditions and acquired degenerative illnesses.

Residents were also asked to bring a toy for underprivileged children which will be sent to Strathyre Girls Home and Johannesburg Children’s Home.

“I’m pleased to see Rhodes Park being used again by the community. This is beautiful and encourages the spirit of giving and that is what Christmas is all about,” said Ward 66 councillor Carlos Da Rocha.

Potgieter said Carols in my Park was a Kensington annual event years back. She said, “Many people in Kensington used to attend the function every year, it is something that is missed in our community. Also, the park needs to be put to good use.

“This park with all the bad stuff that happened here deserves to be remembered for the good stuff. We wanted everyone in Kensington and surrounds to look at it and call it ‘my park’ again.”

Potgieter thanked the community for the support and attendance. “We would like to thank all those who attended both physically and in spirit. Thank you all for helping us take our park back, to make wonderful memories.

“Let us all help to make our suburb great.”
