Police officers commended

JOHANNESBURG - Jo'burg East police cluster commended two constables for a good job.

Two Cleveland police constables were commended by the Joburg East police cluster commander, Major General Dimakatso Ndaba after they made an arrest in connection with a series of rapes in the area.

Ndaba and her management team praised constables Aluwani Makhado and George Mapheto Mapomele after they arrested a 30-year-old man who was sought by the police in connection with four rape cases.

Due to the fact that there were so many cases of rape in the Cleveland and Jeppe areas, the police are investigating the possibility of a serial rapist. “All the rapes were committed this month. The [rapist] would target ladies who were coming from night clubs and taverns in the early hours of the morning,” said Jeppe police spokesperson, captain Richard Munyai.

“He would offer them a lift home as he pretended to be driving a meter taxi. Along the way, he would either stop or pass the destination where the victims were supposed to get off. He would threaten them with a knife and force them to the back seat of the car and rape them.”

The suspect was arrested on 6 November in Jules Street, Malvern, in a car he allegedly used as a taxi.

“He appeared in Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 8 November and the case was postponed for a bail application while the police investigation continues,” concluded Munyai.
