JOBURG - EblockWatch tracks down hit-and-run suspect

A man who is suspected of having hit a woman with his car on 15 November has been caught by members of EblockWatch.

The group posted a video on 28 November, of the suspect suspect surrounded by members of the public while waiting for police to arrive on the scene in Bree street.

A video of the hit and run, which was posted on Facebook has been circulating for the past couple of weeks of 32-year-old Lucia Matlou being dragged down Sekoto Street in Newtown.

The footage shows Matlou being hit by a white bakkie, which caught her leg and dragged her for about 30 metres.

According to reports, the mother of a three-month-old girl said, “I wasn’t going to die. I told myself that today, I’m not prepared to leave my three-month-old daughter behind,” Matlou said.

The incident was caught on CCTV on 1 November. The video went viral on social media, sparking outrage and horror. According to reports, Matlou was admitted to Joburg’s Charlotte Maxeke Hospital and discharged just a few hours later.

It is believed the bakkie had collided with another vehicle and the driver was allegedly escaping from the scene when he hit Matlou.

Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela, said a case has not yet been opened. “We currently cannot act on the matter because there is no case opened. As soon as a case had been opened we can act on that,” said Makhubela.
