Sacred Heart College pupils debate to the top

JOBURG - Sacred Heart College pupils were selected for the Gauteng senior and junior debating provincial teams.

Sacred Heart College celebrated the success of Lula Pam-Grant and Tariro Banganyani, who were both selected for Gauteng’s senior and junior debating provincial teams.

The college is enormously proud of their provincial debaters. “We are not at all surprised because it was only a matter of time before Lula and Tariro’s commitment, hard work and skill were recognised. They are two people who always go above and beyond that which is required of them, who seek new challenges and who maintain a critical awareness of what is going on in the world around them,” said Claire Baker, a debating coach at Sacred Heart College.

Baker advised anyone who wishes to excel in debating to keep up to date with current affairs, not only to know what’s happening but also to understand why it’s happening. “Debaters question everything; they uncover hidden agendas, examine social and political motivations and, most importantly, they strive to find objectivity, justice and fairness in a world which is plagued by narrow-mindedness and superficial thinking,” she said.

“As a debating coach, I can say with absolute assurance that debating is the best thing that any learner can do at school. It makes you smarter and helps you to conquer your fears, so that when you leave school you are already thinking at a higher level than your peers. You are able to weigh up all sides of a story and you have the self-confidence to assert your ideas.”
