Reddam girl continues to defy all odds

LYNDHURST – True inspiration: Young girl defies the odds despite having lived with diabetes for three years.

Lyndhurst resident, Carol Ann Lowe has been a valued ambassador for Reddam House School in Bedfordview since January 2004 and has been a role model for youth living with diabetes.

Lowe has lived with type 1 diabetes for three years, which was said to have been brought on by shock after her family’s domestic worker tragically died.

Despite her illness, the inspiring teenager has dedicated herself to academic excellence with enthusiasm and diligence, and has dedicated much time and involvement in every other area of school life.

At the end of this year, Lowe is expected to matriculate having written examinations.

Not letting diabetes get the best of her, Lowe became heavily committed and successful in sporting and cultural pursuits, represented her school in swimming and water polo and obtaining provincial colours.

The 17-year-old recently received the President’s Award (Gold) for community service. Over the past two years, Lowe has devoted more than 900 hours of her private time to community service and received this award for her amazing contribution.

“It has been a privilege to have had the opportunity to work with Carol Ann, with her diverse interests, mature insights, appreciation for the arts and willingness to learn,” said principal Stephen Hazley. He also added that Lowe’s passion and fortitude will stand her in good stead in her future.

Despite being in her last year of high school, Lowe will not stop giving back to the community.

Due to all her hard work contributing towards community service, her school has a trophy named after her, called the Lowe Social Leadership Award.

Lowe has received a job offer in Dubai working at Atlantis, The Palm, as a lifeguard and accepted the offer.

This young warrior is also an ambassador for various organisations and charities which include Egoli Kids, Stop Hunger Now, Chic Mamas, Benoni Child Welfare, Ark Animals, Youth with Diabetes, Mamba and Red Bin Brigade.
